This course is for Aboriginal people who want to gain basic training in a variety of visual arts, music or performance areas. It provides an introduction to practical, conceptual and theoretical aspects of traditional arts, fine arts and crafts, traditional music and performance as well as contemporary expressions.
It also provides an awareness of local resources, facilities and local cultural practices. This course gives you an opportunity for personal development and introduces you to basic business knowledge and skills for the development of your knowledge and abilities in a form suitable to your culture and community. It also prepares you for work in community arts or music/performance industries. The course deals mainly with Aboriginal cultural art forms and different mediums of cultural expression.
It allows for different learning styles, social relationships and lifestyles. The course promotes Aboriginal culture as the context for your creative expression and allows you to have some responsibility for your learning by involving other Aboriginal people and community groups in the running of this course.
You learn how to develop visual arts skills and practices or performance abilities that reflect an awareness of your own identity and culture, and a pride in your Aboriginal heritage. It gives you access to further education/training opportunities in non Aboriginal specific courses and an opportunity for you to express your artistic abilities in ways that meet your community aspirations.
You gain knowledge and learn skills in the visual arts and crafts, music and performance industries that may lead to employment, or participation in community arts ventures, performance and/or self-employment options.
Modules cover a range of strands: painting, printmaking, sculpture, arts management, textiles, Aboriginal culture and history, business enterprise, picture framing, traditional arts and decoration, music in a number of mediums and performance. These take into consideration the availability of local resources, facilities and local cultural practices. This course is being reviewed and may be replaced with a new course.
Career Opportunities: Art/craftworker, arts and crafts assistant, indigenous art and craft related work or self-employment in the music and/or performance areas.

7865, 90961NSW Certificate III Fine Arts, TAFE course no: 7853. You may get advanced standing or credit for some modules.
Entry Requirements: There are no formal educational requirements for this course. Aboriginal: This course was designed for Aboriginal People of NSW however it is inclusive of Australian Aboriginal people from other states and Torres Strait Islanders. Aboriginality: Aboriginality is sometimes an issue of community acceptance. Individuals should satisfy the local community in this requirement. Aboriginal Communities: The structure of Aboriginal communities around the state will vary widely, for this reason the consultation panels should endeavour to equitably reflect the diversity within the larger community.
