This course is for people who want to develop skills and work as a junior design assistant. You will develop design skills through project-based work, operating individually and in teams.

You will learn to apply creative, critical, and visual judgement towards the resolution of a wide range of original solutions and ideas using a variety of materials, styles and technologies. You will develop a personal expression of contemporary design concepts to client related and individually developed and initiated projects. You will work on major design projects that can be self-initiated, and be expected to operate with entrepreneurial flair, presenting and articulating your design ideas with clarity and confidence.

The course includes coverage of the following areas: creative studies, design research, video production, entertainment design, and design in 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional contexts and media. Career Opportunities: Junior design assistant in performance, advertising, media, fashion, graphic, jewellery, product, and interior design.

Articulation: You can articulate with credit into related Diplomas of events and entertainment design, product design, and interior design.

Entry Requirements: NSW Higher School Certificate (or equivalent).


Student Selection: Your application will be assessed using the following selection criteria: Applicants are required to submit a portfolio of six works, 3 pieces of which are their own selection and 3 pieces set by the campus, demonstrating:

1. A capability in creative media skills (eg drawing etc).
2. Application of colour, techniques and media.
3. Cleanliness in presentation of artworks.
4. Use of critical judgement in the placement of forms, images and layout.

In evaluating the applicant's work the selection panel will look for aptitude in the following:
1. An imaginative use of media (at least two different media should be demonstrated).
2. Individuality of expression
3. A creative approach to problem solving
4. The ability to develop design solutions
5. A well-developed sense of colour appreciation
6. The imaginative and innovative application of ideas
7. Clean and accurate skills in the presentation of work.

Selection Method: Your selection into this course will be based on the information provided on the TAFE NSW Course Application Form. You will need to submit a portfolio of six (6) works, three pieces of which are your own selection and three pieces set by the campus. All work submitted must be your own and must be original - that is, it should not contain the work of others. If the work is too large to submit, or is an installation piece a copy/image may be submitted as long as the support work is authenticated. A panel of at least three teachers will assess your portfolio. Contact your campus for more detailed information on portfolio requirements.
