This course has been specially developed to provide a study pathway for people who want to enter the entertainment industry in a design role. It is a prerequisite for CUE60103 Advanced Diploma of Design for Live Production Theatre and Events (TAFE NSW Course no: 5110). This course is for people who want to develop fundamental skills in design, with an emphasis on designing for the events and entertainment sector. You learn design through project-based learning, operating individually and in teams. The course allows you to apply creative, critical and visual judgement towards the resolution of a wide range of highly original solutions and ideas using a range of materials, styles and technologies. Personal expression of contemporary design concepts to client related and individually developed and initiated projects are encouraged. The course includes the following areas: design research, concept development, exploration of the design process, colour theory, drawing and presentation skills and design in 2 and 3 dimensional contexts and media. Depending on the electives chosen you will have an opportunity to develop expertise in areas such as digital image enhancement; the design of wearable objects; application to spatial design; techniques to produce performance art; techniques to produce installation; set and props construction techniques; costume development; digital media development; make up and public activities and events. Career Opportunities: Design assistant in an event, dance, theatrical or other live entertainment organisation. There are also a wide range of positions in performance-related industries, including live and recorded events, theatrical events, large and small festivals, parades, community arts projects, and film, television and media productions.
Articulation: When you finish this course you may want to continue your studies by applying for the CUE60103 Advanced Diploma of Design for Live Production Theatre and Events (TAFE NSW Course no 5110), or other undergraduate courses - you can apply to a range of institutions including universities that offer higher studies in film and television studies and performing art and theatrical production studies.
Entry Requirements: NSW Higher School Certificate (or equivalent).
Student Selection:
SELECTION CRITERIA: Your application will be assessed using the following selection criteria: Applicants are required to submit a portfolio of six works, 3 pieces of which are their own selection and 3 pieces set by the campus, demonstrating: - A capability in creative media skills (eg drawing etc). - Application of colour, techniques and media. - Cleanliness in presentation of artworks. - Use of critical judgement in the placement of forms, images and layout. In evaluating the applicant's work the selection panel will look for aptitude in the following: - An imaginative use of media (at least two different media should be demonstrated). - Individuality of expression. - A creative approach to problem solving. - The ability to develop design solutions. - A well-developed sense of colour appreciation. - The imaginative and innovative application of ideas. - Clean and accurate skills in the presentation of work.
SELECTION METHOD: A panel of at least three teachers will assess the applicant's portfolio. Information is to be supplied by the Applicant on the Application Form Applicants must sit for an aptitude test and/or submit a portfolio. Applicants are required to submit a portfolio of six (6) works, three pieces of which are their own selection and three pieces set by the campus. The samples submitted must demonstrate knowledge, skills and ability relevant to graphic design. All work submitted must be the applicant's own and must be original: that is, it should not contain the work of others. If the work is too large to submit, or is an installation piece a copy may be submitted as long as the support work is authenticated. Applicants should seek advice from the campus they are applying to regarding more detailed information on portfolio requirements.
