This course is for people who want to work as an enrolled nurse. You will be required to undertake clinical work placement in a variety of approved clinical facilities, as an associate to a registered nurse. You will learn about legal and ethical issues in health care, effective communication strategies, anatomy and physiology and development through the lifespan. A range of medical and health problems and related nursing care in a variety of contexts such as medical/surgical nursing, paediatrics or aged care as well as the administration of medication is also delivered within the course.

There are twenty (20) units of competency and one (1) workplace clinical practice module that must be successfully completed to achieve the qualification.

You should be aware that as clinical work placement in a publi or private hospital or other clinical facility is a compulsory part of this course, you will need to undergo occupational screening and be vaccinated against infectious diseases. You will also be required to undertake a Criminal Record Check and complete a Prohibited Employment Declaration. Your teachers will give you further advice.

When you finish this course you can apply for enrolment with the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW to practise as an enrolled nurse. Learners must be aware that in order to gain enrolment with the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW you must demonstrate sufficient physical and mental capacity to practise as a nurse in a range of health care facilities and also meet the English language requirements of the Nurses and Midwives Board NSW. As from 1 February 2008 the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW requires that all applicants seeking enrolment as a nurse in NSW will be required to submit to the Board the following:
- evidence of two (2) years secondary or vocational or higher education in Australia OR
- evidence of at least two (2) years secondary or vocational or higher education in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, USA, Ireland or Canada OR
- evidence of prior registration as a nurse or midwife in NSW OR
- test results from an IELTS test in the academic module with an overall score of 7 or more.

Career Opportunities Enrolled nurses can work in general or specialised health care facilities.

Articulation When you finish this course you can enrol in Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Nursing qualifications. You can also apply to undertake undergraduate pre-registration nursing degree programs at universities.

Entry Requirements The following academic requirements must be met:
- Satisfactory completion of Standard Mathematics at Year 10 level, PLUS
- Previous enrolment in year 12 English at either Advanced English or Standard English, English as a second language (ESL) at the Higher School Certificate level, Completion of a Certificate III (AQF level 3) qualification or equivalent.

Specific selection criteria will also be applied and include:
- literacy assessment
- numeracy assessment
- interview
- submission of qualifications and experience.

International applicants will be required to have an English language assessment with a result of 6.5 to 7.0 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the equivalent result on a comparable assessment test. Learners must be aware that at the end of the course they must demonstrate sufficient physical and mental capacity to practise as a nurse in a range of health care facilities, in order to gain enrolment with the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW and work as an enrolled nurse.
