This course is for people who want to enter the maritime industry. You will learn how to work safely as a general purpose hand on commercial vessels operating in areas up to coastal and middle waters.

Career Opportunities/Vocational Outcomes: Deck hand.

Articulation: When you finish this course you may apply for advanced standing in TDM20307 Certificate II in Transport and Distribution (Coastal Maritime Operations - Coxswain), TAFE course no: 17447, TDM20207 Certificate II in Transport and Distribution (Marine Engine Driving - Grade 3), TAFE course no: 17455.

Entry Requirements: There are no formal educational requirements for entry into this course.

Group 1: Operational Quality and Safety - all units must be completed.
TDMMF1107B Survive at sea in the event of vessel abandonment
TDMMF5707A Assist in safe operations and emergency procedures on a coastal vessel
Group 2: Optional Additional Units: at least 3 units must be completed
TDMME1107A Contribute to effective communications and teamwork on a coastal vessel
TDMMF1007B Provide elementary first aid
TDMMF5607A Observe personal safety and social responsibilities
TDMMF6207A Prevent, control and fight fires on board an ocean-going vessel
TDMMR6007A Assist in routine deck operations within limits of responsibility of a General Purpose Hand
Group 3: Enrichment units: you may choose units from this group but they do not count towards course completion.

Ballina - Flexible delivery over 36 weeks (1 year). The Maritime section is open on Tuesday and Wednesdays, 4.00 pm - 9.00 pm; Thursdays, 9.00 am - 4.00 pm and Fridays, 9.00 am - 3.00 pm.
