This course is targeted specifically to Aboriginal people who want to learn an Aboriginal language at an introductory level and to develop skills and knowledge about the Aboriginal culture. The course is designed to provide you with the basic skills and strategies to achieve Aboriginal language skills that underpin the development of your identity and your self-esteem. When you successfully complete this course, you will have gained:
- access to the Aboriginal culture
- knowledge and respect of Aboriginal heritage
- increased self-esteem as an Aboriginal student
You will acquire a limited range of language structures and vocabulary items to enable you to speak, and to a limited extent, read and write the Aboriginal language in routine social, community and work settings. In addition, you will gain a knowledge and appreciation of Aboriginal culture. This course is especially suited to people who are looking for employment in the education sector for Aboriginal people; people who aim to work with Aboriginal communities to strengthen relationships and strive for community capacity building and sustainable development.

Career Opportunities: Aboriginal language skills and cultural knowledge can be an advantage in the education sector, government departments, community services, health, and tourism industry. Articulation There are advanced standing arrangements between the Certificate I in Aboriginal Language course and the Sydney University Bachelor of Arts degree, the Graduate Certificate of Indigenous Language Education, Graduate Diploma of Indigenous Language Education and Master of Indigenous Language Education.

Entry Requirements: Entry is open to Aboriginal peoples. Aboriginal peoples are of Aboriginal descent, identify as Aboriginal and are accepted as such by the local Aboriginal community. Entry for non-Aboriginal people is subject to local Aboriginal community approval. There are no formal entry requirements for this course. Applicants should have good communication skills, good reading and writing skills and knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal cultures, societies and languages.
