This course is for people who want to learn how to communicate with deaf or hearing impaired people using Signed English.

You will acquire a range of expressive and receptive Signed English communication skills and well-developed visual communication skills. You will also develop an understanding of the Deaf Community, Deaf culture, history and language (AUSLAN). In addition, you will understand the types and causes of hearing loss and develop an awareness of the different assistive listening devices and adaptive technology.

This course is especially suited to people in education and training who have responsibility for teaching Deaf or hearing impaired children and adults. It is also suited to parents and family of Deaf or hearing impaired children who have a need to communicate with family members.

Career Opportunities: Signed English skills can be an advantage for people employed in the education sectors and in community services.

Entry Requirements: There are no formal educational requirements for this qualification. Must have developed English literacy skills.

Lismore - Part-time evening, 3 hours per week for 1 year, Tuesdays, 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm.
You do not need to complete a North Coast Institute application form for this location. You should attend the Information session 29 January 2009 any time between 1.00 pm - 7.00 pm, Room AG.13.
