This course is for people wanting to work as an animal attendant or carer in kennels and catteries, pounds and welfare centres, quarantine establishments, zoological and fauna parks, wildlife refuges, research centres, pet shops and commercial animal production enterprises.

The course enables animal carers to develop skills, underpinning knowledge and behavioural attributes required for the care and maintenance of animals in a variety of environments and workplace situations. It also provides you with knowledge of the animal care industry and its many sectors. By completing the course, you will be able to carry out a range of animal care and husbandry duties under supervision, maintain animal facilities, apply workplace safety and ethical practices to your work, and communicate effectively with supervisors and colleagues.

Articulation: When you finish this course you can apply for advanced standing in RUV30104 Certificate III in Animal Technology, TAFE course no: 1048, RUV30204 Certificate III in Captive Animals, TAFE course no: 1068, RUV30304 Certificate III in Companion Animal Services, TAFE course no: 4289 or RUV4040 Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, TAFE course no: 1094.

Entry Requirements: There are no formal educational requirements for entry to this course.

Evidence of ability to complete the course, based on:
C1 Your previous education and training (Part C in application form - up to 20 points);
C2 Your paid or unpaid work experience (up to 20 points);
C3 Your life and community experience (up to 20 points).

Demonstrated relevance of the course:
D1 Relevance of course to your career plans and goals (Part D in application form - up to 15 points);
D2 Knowledge of the career area (up to 15 points).
Other factors relating to any previous disadvantages that may be taken into account in the selection process (Part E in application form - up to 10 points).

Semester 12 2009: TAFE NSW Statewide Application form by 31 October 2008. Late applications may be accepted however this is an extremely popular course and it is highly recommended that you get your application in by the closing date.

You must have current work in a veterinary or animal care facility to enrol in this course.
