This course is for people who work, or wish to work, at a trade level in the arboriculture sector of the horticulture industry, especially people who already have qualifications in amenity horticulture. In conjunction with relevant practical experience, the course enables you to develop sound underpinning knowledge and a broad range of practical skills required to cultivate, establish, maintain and care for trees and shrubs in public and private gardens, public parks and reserves, bushland, recreational facilities, housing estates, institutions and industrial complexes.
You will learn to provide information about trees and their culture; implement tree pruning programs; sample soils and analyse results; improve plant nutrition; implement tree care and maintenance programs; operate chainsaws; undertake complex tree climbing and aerial rescue; remove dead, damaged, dangerous or unsound trees or tree limbs; fell small trees and remove trees in confined spaces. You will also learn how to observe environmental work practices; follow occupational health and safety procedures; respond to emergencies; communicate effectively in the workplace; work effectively in the industry and co-ordinate worksite activities. The course meets the training requirements for a traineeship in Horticulture (Arboriculture).
Career Opportunities: Arboriculture tradesperson, arborist, tree surgeon.
Articulation: Successful completion of this course will enhance a students ability to enrol in and complete a higher level qualification. This course articulates directly to Certificate IV in Horticulture (Arboriculture)

Entry Requirements: NSW School Certificate (or equivalent, from another educational authority) and relevant industry experience, or RTF20203 Certificate II in Horticulture (Arboriculture), or RTF20103 Certificate II in Horticulture (specialisation or general), or relevant workplace or other appropriate experience. Persons who do not satisfy the above criteria but who can provide evidence that they are capable of achieving the outcomes of this course at AQF Certificate III level may also be considered. It is strongly recommended that applicants complete the RTF20203 Certificate II in Horticulture (Arboriculture) before undertaking this course.
