This course is for people entering, or wishing to enter, the parks and gardens sector of the horticulture industry as an assistant to a tradesperson gardener. It is also suitable for people who may be seeking employment as an apprentice gardener or who may intend to progress to a trade level qualification in horticulture.

In conjunction with relevant practical experience, the course enables you to develop sound underpinning knowledge and a broad range of practical skills required to assist in planting and caring for trees, shrubs, flower beds and lawns in public and private gardens, public parks and reserves, recreational facilities, housing estates and industrial complexes.

You will learn to recognise plants; plant trees and shrubs; prepare and maintain plant displays; propagate plants; prune trees and shrubs; establish turf and maintain grassed areas; treat weeds, plant pests and diseases; and operate and maintain machinery. You will learn how to observe environmental work practices; follow occupational health and safety procedures; communicate effectively in the workplace; and work effectively in the industry. The course meets the training requirements for traineeships in Horticulture (Parks and Gardens).
