This course is for people entering, or wishing to enter, the wholesale and production nursery sector of the horticulture industry as a nursery assistant. It is also suitable for people who may be seeking employment as a nursery apprentice or who may intend to progress to trade level qualifications in horticulture.

In conjunction with relevant practical experience, the course enables you to develop sound underpinning knowledge and a broad range of practical skills required to assist in propagating, maintaining and supplying a wide range of healthy nursery plants to customers such as retail nurseries, garden centres, horticulture enterprises, landscape contractors, government agencies and revegetation projects.

You will learn to recognise plants; propagate plants; plant trees and shrubs; pot-on plants; tend nursery plants; prune shrubs and small trees; apply chemicals under supervision; treat weeds, plant pests, diseases and disorders; operate machinery and equipment; maintain pressurised irrigation systems and co-ordinate a crop regulation program.

You will learn about the basic properties of soils and growing media; how to observe environmental work practices; follow occupational health and safety procedures; communicate effectively in the workplace; and work effectively in the industry. The course meets the training requirements for traineeships in Horticulture (Wholesale Nursery).
