This course is for people who are employed as apprentices, or who are working, or wish to work, in wholesale and production nurseries in the horticulture industry.

In conjunction with relevant practical experience, the course enables you to develop sound underpinning knowledge and a broad range of practical skills required to propagate, maintain and supply a wide range of healthy nursery plants to customers such as retail nurseries, garden centres, horticulture enterprises, landscape contractors, government agencies and revegetation projects.

You will learn to recognise and provide information about plants; propagate plants; tend and maintain nursery plants; pot-on plants; plant trees and shrubs; prune shrubs and small trees; sample and analyse soils and growing media; implement plant nutrition programs; treat and control plant pests, diseases and disorders; treat and control weeds; prepare, handle, apply and store chemicals; operate and maintain irrigation systems; and operate machinery and equipment. You will learn how to observe, maintain and monitor environmental work practices; follow and carry out occupational health and safety procedures; communicate effectively in the workplace; co-ordinate work site activities and work effectively in the industry. The course meets the training requirements for apprenticeships in Nursery (Wholesale Nursery).

Articulation: When you finish this course you can apply for advanced standing in RTF40603 Certificate IV in Horticulture (Wholesale Nursery), TAFE course no: 1929.
