RGR02 Racing Industry
TAFE NSW Course No: 6597
This course is for people who work or want to work in the horse racing industry as an advanced stablehand (also known as a stable foreman). An advanced stablehand is a person who is in charge of daily operations in a thoroughbred or harness racing stable. Their prime function is to implement the delegated instructions of a trainer who has overall responsibility for the enterprise. Advanced stablehands coordinate other stablehands as well as provide care for horses, and perform tasks such as feeding, grooming, exercising and transporting horses. You will determine nutritional requirements and assess horse health as well as plan training and racing programs. An advanced stablehand is able to act autonomously and use discretion and judgement in finding solutions to a range of problems, and provide leadership to a team. The course develops the skills and knowledge required to coordinate staff in a racing stable so that the needs of individual horses are met. It prepares you to care for highly strung, expensive animals that can easily injure themselves or their handlers. The course highlights the responsibility and duty of care involved in taking sole charge of an animal in situations where a danger exists to the animal, the handler, or the general public (for instance, unloading from a float or leading on a racecourse). This course is under review and may be replaced.
