Qualification: Certificate II (AQF)
Training Package: RGR02 Racing Industry

TAFE Course No: 6681
Nominal Hours: 380

This is an entry level course for people who work or want to work in the horse racing industry. A stablehand is a person who is employed in a thoroughbred or harness racing stable and whose prime function is to care for the animals and to meet their individual needs of feeding, grooming, exercising, transporting, and keeping the environment safe, clean and hygienic. The stablehand works under the direction of a trainer or stable foreman but is also able to act autonomously in certain situations requiring solutions to a limited range of problems, or work as part of a team. The course develops the skills and knowledge required to apply occupational health and safety procedures, handle horses safely, work effectively in the racing industry, care for horses and either perform basic riding or driving tasks or oversee safe handling of horses. It prepares you to care for highly strung, expensive animals that can easily injure themselves or their handlers. The course highlights the responsibility and duty of care involved in taking sole charge of an animal in situations where a danger exists to the animal, the handler, or the general public (for instance, unloading from a float or leading on a racecourse).

Career Opportunities: Employment possibilities are centred on working as a stablehand in the thoroughbred or harness racing industries. Employment is also possible in the general, recreational horse industry.
