Local Students Receive Scholarship Funding
11th June 03
Kempsey Campus of the North Coast Institute of TAFE is one of only a few locations throughout NSW able to provide scholarships to students who may be facing financial hardship.
The Mick Young Scholarship Trust established the scholarship three years ago in memory of the late Federal Cabinet Minister, Mick Young. With a total value of $3,000 the scholarship is aimed at providing assistance to people in the fields of education, vocational training, music, the arts, science and literature.
Mick Young’s brother, Mr Barry Young, who is also the chair of the Mick Young Scholarship Trust, presented ten students with their scholarships funds at a luncheon held on Wednesday June 4, at the Kempsey Campus.
Ros Eveleigh, Campus Manager at Kempsey Campus said “Mick Young was well known for his commitment to enhancing opportunities for financially disadvantaged people and it’s great to see the very real benefits of Mick Young’s philosophy. These students have the motivation and commitment to furthering their education and improving their life circumstances.”
The scholarships provide assistance to students with the costs associated with studying such as paying tuition fees, purchasing text books, living expenses and travel costs.
Amber Priestley, currently completing the Tertiary Preparation Course,
received one of the scholarships. “I will use the money to purchase
a computer, as a mother of a three year old, I find it difficult to get
to the Campus every day to use a computer. My course is great, the teachers
are very supportive and owning my own computer will help me achieve my
goal, to go to uni and obtain a degree in social work”, said Amber.
