TAFE Aboriginal Artists Exhibit work at Envirofair

7 July 2004

A group of emerging Koori artists from the Taree and Great Lakes area will show their environmentally inspired artworks when they exhibit at the Envirofair on Saturday, June 12th.

The artists are studying in the Certificate II in Aboriginal Arts and Cultural Practices, offered through the Arts & Media section of the Great Lakes Campus of TAFE and delivered at both the Taree and Great Lakes Campuses. The course has been designed to encourage the development of practical, cultural, presentation and business skills for producing selling and exhibiting their artworks and public artforms. The Envirofair offers an opportunity for these artists to show off their newly learned skills.

The artists have been working all semester to create a collection of paintings, drawings, photographs and craft items under the guidance of Koori artist and community elder Russell Saunders, and artists and TAFE teachers Sandra Guy, and Trina Sydee -Stout. As well as producing the artwork they have learnt how to document and exhibit the work and have studied fair trading principles, pricing, cash management and promotion methods with Business Principles teacher Catherine Calvin. While the students are learning about modern and traditional Aboriginal Art, they are also getting a vital understanding of their culture in the Manning and Great Lakes area.

“While we paint we are often undergoing a journey of self-discovery, learning in both the practical and spiritual sense,” said Russell Saunders. “We do this in both individually inspired artworks and large community murals which we paint together in public places.”

All artwork on display at the Envirofair will be for sale and range in price from $20 to $750, providing an opportunity for everyone to have an affordable piece of contemporary Aboriginal art produced by local artists.
