Women turn to art to re-start their careers

21 June 2004

Wendy Chadban, the wife of Great Lakes Mayor John Chadban is joining with women students at the Great Lakes Campus of TAFE NSW to unveil a unique mosaic mural on Thursday June 24 at 10 am. Producing the mural was part of their study in “Career Education and Employment for Women” (CEEW), a course designed for women who have been out of the workforce for sometime, and are looking for a new career direction.

This course has been successful in helping many women re-entering the workplace develop confidence and acquire many new skills. Teacher Veronica de Plater said “This course has been run by TAFE NSW for many years now, and it continues to amaze me how empowering it is to women, and how many women leave the course feeling so much more confident and believing in themselves.”

Student Laurie Evans agreed strongly. “This course has encouraged me to ask more questions and in so doing has given me confidence. I have learnt that there are rewards for doing things to improve yourself and I feel validated by my associations and achievements through the CEEW course.”

There is a number of electives and within the art elective student learn the ancient art of mosaics. Taught by artist Elizabeth Jones, the CEEW women have learnt the direct method of mosaic assembly techniques, involving the cutting of tiles and glass, adhesive work, and grouting.

The mosaic is a valued artwork which marks the beginning of future mosaics and murals to enhance the Great Lakes Campus. Set against the Forster Tuncurry Bridge and the surrounding marine environment, the design features a woman holding two scales. The scales are a symbol of the balance that each woman tries to achieve throughout her life.

After working on the mosaic for weeks, student Gloria Cable was really impressed to see the finished product mounted on the wall. “It just looked absolutely brilliant” Ms Cable said. “I am very proud to have been associated with such a lovely talented group of people.”

Applications for Semester 2 CEEW courses at Great Lakes Campus close on June 25.
