Year 12 Urged to Consider TAFE and Trade Options

17 December 2004

Young people across the North Coast are being urged to consider TAFE and trade options, as they join their 66,000 Year 12 counterparts across NSW in celebrating or pondering their HSC results released today.

The Director of TAFE NSW - North Coast Institute, Neil Black said that people who continue their education beyond Year 12, whether in TAFE or university and whether full-time or part-time, have better job prospects and on average earn higher incomes.

Mr Black said that people who complete TAFE courses are highly regarded by employers as they already have work-ready knowledge and skills.  Over 27% of this year’s HSC students have completed a vocational education and training (VET) course as part of their HSC program so many have, or are well down the path to qualifying for, an entry-level TAFE qualification.

"Among the most popular VET options for the HSC Class of 2004 are Hospitality, Information Technology and Business. Students who have done these courses for their HSC are well placed to compete for entry to the higher level TAFE certificate and diploma programs in these areas" said Mr Black.

Apart from providing a pathway to a career in or beyond the  North Coast region, some TAFE courses such as certificate IV and diploma programs can qualify students for 6-12 months advanced standing in a related university degree. TAFE NSW fees compare very favourably with HECS and people in financial hardship may be eligible for fee exemptions.

Mr Black also urged young people to consider an apprenticeship or traineeship in one of the traditional or new trade areas where employers are "crying out for skilled workers".

"We are seeing almost daily media reports about skill shortages. The North Coast Institute is doing our bit to respond but others have a big role to play. Employers are now starting to take on more trainees and apprentices and our HSC graduates and their parents need to take a fresh look at the options. There are opportunities in construction, electrical, engineering, hospitality, primary industries, retail and other industries for trainees, apprentices and skilled labour. Young people who complete their TAFE study and work hard in the early years in these industries can look forward to a secure future."

Mr Black said that while first round applications for many of the North Coast Institute's programs closed in late October, applications are being accepted at many campuses for vacancies that are still available or could become available in the New Year. People wanting to find out more about TAFE courses including certificate, diploma, trade and traineeship options, can go to the North Coast Institute's website at www.nci.tafensw.edu.au, or phone the Institute's course information line on 131 601, or contact their local campus.
