TAFE Students a key part of Discoverfest eventMonday 1st NovemberThe Hastings’ Discoverfest event this weekend features a big involvement of students from the North Coast Institute’s Port Macquarie Campus. Students from the Certificate III in Commercial Cookery are assisting six celebrity chefs from the region, as well as the Australian Women’s Weekly Lyndey Milan, who will be conducting cooking demonstrations between 10 am and 4 pm. Teacher David Baker says that there will be a whole lot of cooking equipment set up in the specially built kitchen in the Country Energy marquee. “These six chefs are working in high profile restaurants in the Hastings area, and it’s an eye-opener to watch them at work – they are extraordinarily accomplished at what they are doing.” Students doing their Diploma in Event Management will also be there on the day, having assisted in the past few weeks with the planning and realisation of the event. Student Fiona Maxwell says that they have helped with aspects like the sponsorship plan and designing exhibitor survey forms and that the experience is part of an actual event case-study that comprises a major part of their final assignment. “We will be there on the day from 6 am, helping set up displays, handling the surveys, things like that…and then we’ll help pack it all up.” Ms Maxwell says. The public are encouraged to visit the cooking display marquee, where information on all Port Macquarie Campus’ Tourism and Hospitality courses for 2005 will be available.
