Modern learning technology showcased on Mid North Coast

A series of events from Taree to Coffs Harbour in November will showcase some innovative learning and education approaches and enable members of the North Coast community to appreciate that education has definitely moved a long way from the days of ‘chalk and talk’.

As part of the state-wide NET*Working 2004 initiative, the events include workshops, learning forums and demonstrations addressing flexible learning technologies and approaches like learning on the internet, workplace learning and using ‘virtual firms’ to simulate the workplace.

TAFE NSW – North Coast Institute, Mid North Coast Area Health Service and Port Macquarie Community College have partnered to stage workshops for staff involved in delivering education and training in health and related occupations. There are two of these, entitled “Bridge to Flexible Learning Workshops” . The first is on 5 November from 9.30 am - 1.30 pm at the Port Macquarie Community College , and the second is on 10 November, 9.30 - 1.30 pm at the Education Centre, Coffs Harbour Health Campus on the Pacific Highway
at Coffs Harbour . These workshops will introduce participants to a range of flexible learning technologies and explore their applications in the health care training. This is a guided hands-on workshop held in a computer training room so participants will be able to try first hand some of the applications.

There will also be two “Bridge to Flexible Learning Forums’ following these workshops that are open to all community members and educators who have an interest in flexible learning. They will introduce participants to a range of flexible learning technologies and provide a forum to discuss the applicability to workplace learning and education.

Additionally, TAFE NSW-North Coast Institute’s Taree Campus is holding a Regional Virtual Trade Fair at Taree Campus on Monday 8 November starting at 10 am . In this event, virtual ‘practice’ firms from Forster, Gloucester , Dungog, Kingscliff, Coffs Harbour and Sydney trade competitively with each other and are being judged by local identities.

The whole event is also being conducted live as part of the NET Working 2004 Online Conference.

Community and local businesses are invited to come to the campus and participate in the fair. The firms display the real goods of their business partner for sale on the day, as well as their own virtual goods. The practice firms’ trade with each other using cheque books, but visitors to the event can trade with the practice firms using cash vouchers – the practice firms’ virtual equivalent of real cash. The vouchers will be given away free to the customers.

There will be plenty of real food for sale – Campus canteen staff will have a stall with sandwiches and other treats and there will be special deals on hot food at the canteen. The Taree Campus Student Association will have barbeque fare and Devonshire teas.

The international award winning Green Thumbs virtual practice firm will also hold a silent auction to raise money for the Manning Base Hospital’s Children’s Ward and entertainment will include Russell Saunders playing the didgeridoo and the beat of African drums from the campus drumming/percussion group “Drumbeat”.
