New facilities at Wollongbar Campus improve delivery of TAFE services to Richmond ValleyTuesday, 31 August 2004Nearly $9 million worth of new facilities at the TAFE NSW - North Coast Institute Wollongbar Campus will be formally opened on Tuesday, 24 August 2004. The opening will be officially conducted by Mr Bryce Gaudry, MP (Parliamentary Secretary, representing the NSW Minister for Education and Training, Dr Andrew Refshauge) and the Hon Larry Anthony, Federal Minister for Richmond and Minister for Children and Youth Affairs), representing the Federal Minister for Eduction, Science and Technology, the Hon Dr Brendan Nelson. Mr Gaudry said that the official opening of the Stage 3 facilities commemorates the realisation of a 25 year plan to expand TAFE facilities in the Richmond Valley and relocate some TAFE programs from flood prone areas of the Lismore Campus to modern state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities. “The State Government’s contribution to improving TAFE services for the Richmond Valley is reflected in its significant contribution to these new facilities at Wollongbar Campus and also other works underway at Lismore Campus.” Mr Gaudry said. The construction was completed in 2003 at a total cost of $8.85 million. The Stage 3 development includes 5 new buildings and a refurbished multi purpose welding workshop. “The new tourism and hospitality facilities enable students to work in a simulated working environment, including a state-of-the art commercial kitchen and a training restaurant,” said Mr Gaudry. “This ensures that the students are fully prepared and well-practised in all work-related tasks, thus making them job-ready from day one.” Students studying trades courses (construction, electrical, fitting and machining, metal fabrication and welding) also benefit from facilities and equipment that reflect the latest industry standards. The new trades facilities allow trade programs to be delivered more flexibly and efficiently to trainees and apprentices undertaking the TAFE component of their training. The official opening will be held at the Nightcap Restaurant at Wollongbar Campus, and will commence at 11:00 am on Tuesday 24 August, 2004. This will be followed by an inspection of the new facilities. One of the newest and largest of seventeen campuses within TAFE NSW - North Coast Institute, Wollongbar Campus enrolled 5,187 students in 2003 and delivered 916,480 student contact hours during that year. Wollongbar Campus provides a contemporary teaching and learning environment for a wide range of nationally recognised certificate and diploma level programs including: agriculture, automotive, building construction, child studies, electrical, hairdressing, horticulture, information technology, general education, metal fabrication and welding, plumbing, panel beating and spray painting, welfare, textile, clothing and footwear. Support services include library and learning support centre, disability, counselling, Aboriginal and student amenities and canteen. Refurbishing is also underway to the facilities in Lismore Campus that have been vacated by those sections that have moved to the new facilities at the Wollongbar Campus. The educational profile at Lismore Campus will continue to focus on the education and training needs of business and the community including Aboriginal education, arts and media, general education, administrative services, information technology and retail services. |
