TAFE WEEK 200430 July 2004This year’s TAFE Week, which will be held from 1-7 August, will celebrate the achievements of TAFE students, graduates and teachers. Here on the North Coast, many activities will take place, including award ceremonies, art exhibitions, expos, campus open days, showcases and seminars. The public are encouraged to contact or visit their local Campus on the Open Days to find out what’s on and what course vacancies are available for Semester 2. The theme of this year’s TAFE Week is “Love Your Work”, reflecting the TAFE NSW commitment to “Give students the ticket to a great job in their chosen field, by giving them the practical skills, knowledge and confidence to succeed in today’s dynamic workplace”. Institute Director Neil Black said that TAFE Week was an ideal opportunity for people to reflect on their career aspirations, whether they are at school, employed, unemployed or simply undergoing a transition in their lives. “It is amazing how many students tell me how that first small TAFE course changed their lives for the better,” Mr Black said. “It is great for self esteem, as a reminder of some of the things you are really good at, or a formalisation of the life skills you already have.” Mr Black added that many campuses have last-minute vacancies in some excellent courses, which may be that “one small step on the road to a great and successful career.” Mr Black also emphasised that now, more than ever, it was important in TAFE Week to remember the critical role TAFE NSW – North Coast Institute plays in producing skilled workers for the vast range of industries and small businesses in the North Coast region. “We are a growing region, no-one disagrees with that, but without skills and knowledge, our community will not be able to sustain that growth.”
