School students gain work based skills

Tuesday 16th August

TAFE NSW – North Coast Institute’s Taree Campus and Big W worked together to give students opportunities to gain practical work based skills that will enhance their applications within the retail environment.

The five students from Chatham High School are undertaking a TAFE Vocational Education and Training (TVET) course in Retail as part of their HSC studies. The retail students have been carrying out work placement at Big W allowing them to put into practice many skills learnt in the classroom over the past six months.

The team at Big W including Neale Mills and Katie Moore provided the students with an introduction to workplace safety and an overview of Big W’s vision mission and values prior to their work placement. In addition working at Big W has enabled the students to work towards the learning outcomes of their Retail Course such as Apply Safe Work Practice Communication Housekeeping and Operate Retail Equipment.

Retail teacher Bronwyne Wallace and Equity support teacher Robyn Macpherson worked with the students Todd Carney, Cameron De Jong, Mark Brett ,Gavin Anderson and Matt Lambert within the class room environment providing the students with the retail skills and knowledge enabling them to enter the workplace with confidence.

“The Retail department at Taree Campus have purchased relevant retail equipment similar to those at Big W such as Safe T Steps and trolleys so as to consolidate and reinforce the skills gained at work placement. We would like to thank Big W and the students for their ongoing support and commitment to this project,” said Ms Wallace.
