Vocational Training Courses and the HSC

Wednesday 3rd August

TAFE Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses are subjects that students can undertake as part of their Higher School Certificate (HSC). TVET Courses count towards the HSC, with some contributing to a student's University Admission Index (UAI). Students get the benefit of gaining nationally recognised industry qualifications at the same time.

Some TVET subjects involve "off-the-job" training at the TAFE Campus and "on-the-job" training through Workplacement, time spent in a real work place (usually 35 hours per year of your course). Student placements are arranged by Coffs Harbour Regional Workplace Learning Group Inc in consultation with the students' teacher.

Workplacement provides an opportunity for students to practise/enhance/learn skills which are part of their course, in a real work environment.

Recently Renee Jones, a Year 12 student studying for a Certificate II in Tourism at the North Coast Institute of TAFE Coffs Harbour Education Campus as part of her HSC, undertook her workplacement with Singapore Airlines in Sydney. While on her workplacement Renee experienced time in several Singapore Airline departments at their head office in Sydney CBD and at the International Airport, Sales, Reception, Marketing, Reservations, and Finance and traffic office.

Singapore Airlines were so impressed with the high standards Renee showed that they provided her with a letter of reference.
