Murwillumbah TAFE students keep Speed on Tweed competitors on track
Monday 18 September 2006
Teachers and students from Murwillumbah Campus, TAFE NSW-North Coast Institute, equipped and ran a repair workshop for the duration of the Speed on Tweed Festival from 22-24 September and enabled over a dozen drivers and their cars to continue to compete in the event.
The repairs included revitalising a failed starter motor, repairing body damage to wings and bonnets, and even a front end make over. Acting Head Teacher Michael Edwards and teachers Richard Flint and Michael Murray supervised a team of five students who according to Mr Edwards, all enjoyed the opportunity to have hands-on access to the rare and unusual vehicles seen in this type of historic racing event.
“Despite the intermittent rain, the event was busy and exciting,” said Mr Edwards. “All the drivers and crew were most grateful for the service we provided and congratulated the students on their diligence and application.”
Speed on Tweed is a unique street time-trial for historic cars on a circuit that runs through the picturesque town of Murwillumbah. It started in 2002, and now attracts around 50,000 spectators over a two day period.
TAFE NSW-North Coast Institute offers a range of automotive courses, which enable students to enter apprenticeships or learn specific aspects of automotive work, with practical opportunities for hands-on experience on a wide range of vehicles.
