Port Macquarie design student wins national awards

Monday 18 September, 2006

Port Macquarie-based graphic design student Jordan Pollard has won two awards in the 2006 Australian Bookplate Design Award competition.

Jordan entered the competition as part of his study in historic design periods in the Certificate IV Graphic Design Foundation course and won the major award for the competition which was the ‘Best Bookplate Design’, for which the prize was $5,000 plus a medallion. Jordan also won ‘Best Tertiary Student Design’, for which he received $500 plus a medallion.

Jordan’s artwork will also be included in a new promotional leaflet for the Keith Wingrove Memorial Trust depicting the winning entries for 2006.

Teacher Lorrae OBrien says that this is the first time the graphic design students from Port Macquarie TAFE Campus have entered, and she was very happy for Jordan’s success.

Ms OBrien says that Design Research is part of the Graphic Design Foundation course work which investigates Historical styles of art from the late 1800s on. “Students were able to study a number of historical styles of art which were of interest to them as part of their background research for the project,” said Ms OBrien. “Jordan studied Art Nouveau, Pop Art and Australian art in the late 1900s.”

The bookplate design must mention the owner’s name, and incorporate the words “Ex Libris” or similar (this means ‘From the library’ or ‘From the collection of books’).

All graphic art techniques were permitted as long as 3 copies of each bookplate were signed in pencil by the designer and submitted for entry.
