Grafton TAFE students receive major awards

Thursday 1 June 2006

Two students from Grafton Campus have featured prominently in the TAFE NSW – North Coast Institute Student Achievement Awards.

The Student Achievement Awards were announced at an Awards dinner held at the Osprey Restaurant, at Coffs Harbour Education Campus on 1 June. The awards recognise outstanding achievements in academic effort, community involvement and career commitment and go to students in individual Institute Faculties and in five other major categories.

Adam Standing, a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Certificate III student at Grafton, won the Manufacturing and Engineering Faculty Student Achievement Award because, according to Faculty Manager for Manufacturing and Engineering, Mr Peter Millmore, he “impressed his teachers mightily” with many attributes, including technical knowledge and ability that outstrips more experienced tradesmen, a high level of commitment, a courteous respectful manner and a sunny disposition. “It’s rare to come across a student of this calibre and maturity,” says his teacher Greg Williams. Mr Standing said that he found “learning both theory and practical elements of my trade at TAFE to be extremely beneficial to my workplace practices.”

Jennifer Towers, a Hospitality Management (Diploma) student won the Student Achievement Award in the Tourism, Hospitality, Retail and Personal Services Faculty because not only did she achieve consistently outstanding academic results, she aimed for very high standards, having worked in retail, and consistently showed a dedicated approach to professional presentation and behaviour.
