Life Skills learnt at Murwillumbah Campus

Friday 2 June 2006

A unique course focussing on life skills is being offered at Murwillumbah Campus. Targeting young people, the course deals with the significant life changes experienced by anyone with a new born child and provides hands-on  experience through the use of a ‘simulator baby.

The first Virtual Reality Life Skills Course is near completion with students enjoying and achieving successful outcomes in their course.

Teacher Pam Jackson says that the course was structured so that each student takes responsibility for the baby for a set period of time during the course, so that they could learn first-hand some of the issues and challenges that parenting an infant presents.

Ms Jackson says “All the students have found caring for the simulator/computerised baby a life changing experience and have thoroughly enjoyed this course. Many of them agree that they would recommend it to all young people as a great start to adult responsibilities. “

The Virtual Reality Life Skills Course is offered free to young people aged 15 to 24 who have left school and are not working, or other unemployed young people interested in the discovering more about the life changes around looking after a new born infant.

An information session is to be held at the Murwillumbah Campus, at 3.00pm on Wednesday, 21 June 2006.
