Nursing facilities at Coffs Harbour Education Campus officially opened

Monday 24 July 2006

New nursing facilities at the Coffs Harbour Education Campus (CHEC) will be officially opened at 10.15am on 31 July 2006 by the Parliamentary Secretary Mr Paul McLeay, representing the NSW Minister for Education and Training, the Hon Carmel Tebbutt MP) and the Federal Minister for Health, the Hon Tony Abbott MP.

The facilities were constructed at CHEC in 2005 for the teaching of university and TAFE nursing programs. The total cost of the project was $1.2 million with Southern Cross University providing $0.85m funding and TAFE NSW – North Coast Institute providing $0.35m of the funding from the State Government’s 05/06 TAFE Minor Works allocation.

Mr McLeay said that the new facilities help to address the shortage of nurses, enrolled nurses and aged care nursing assistants on the North Coast of NSW.

“Not only do the facilities provide hands-on skills training for the nursing students in a non-threatening, simulated setting, they also enable the students to carry out their supervised clinical placements in hospitals and other health facilities with increased skills and confidence,” said Mr McLeay.

The new facilities complement the pre-existing nursing facilities at the campus and have allowed an expansion in university and TAFE nursing programs on the Mid North Coast. The new facilities include:

  • Two four-bed clinical training rooms
  • Two general purpose classrooms
  • Training bathroom
  • Shared office space for teaching and support staff
  • Preparation, storage and utilities spaces
