Telling Stories: Exploring Identity Aboriginal Art Course

Friday 3rd August 2007
For the first time TAFE NSW - North Coast Institute’s Murwillumbah Campus is offering a Certificate I in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts Course (CUV10203) delivered in the Byron Bay community.

Head Teacher, Sandra Guy says that this is a Get Skilled course which, as an introduction to the practical and cultural aspects of Aboriginal Cultural Arts, will not only provide initial training for a career as a visual artist but also provide opportunities and pathways for further study in the arts and media field.

“Students will learn how to use drawing, sculpture and printmaking techniques to tell stories and explore their own identity,” says Ms Guy.

“The artwork produced will have a community focus whilst creating opportunities for individual artists to produce work for display.”

Ms Guy highlighted the fact that the teachers selected for the program are highly talented and well respected artists.

“For example, Gwanji Monks is a seasoned sculptor, designer and public artist who will be teaching drawing and sculpture work using clay, stone and wood,” says Ms Guy.

“Anne Leon is an outstanding designer and printmaker who will teach a range of printmaking techniques like screen-printing, block printing and silk painting/printing.”

The course will be delivered from the Byron Bay Youth Centre and Anne Leon’s studio in the Byron Arts and Industrial Estate two days a week for 18 weeks. There will also be opportunities to visit galleries in the Northern Rivers Region and Brisbane, listen to guest speakers, and exhibit artwork.

There are no formal educational requirements for this course and preference will be given to Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people.
