Lismore student awarded national scholarship

Wednesday 3rd October 2007

TAFE NSW - North Coast Institute student and Kenyan refugee Mihuku has been awarded the McAlpine Family Scholarship at the 2007 Youth off the Streets Scholarship Awards held in Sydney recently.

Mihuku arrived in Lismore in 2006, and, according to General Education teacher Lisa Weingarth, showed a ‘determined commitment’ in enrolling and studying two courses at the same time in 2006 and again in 2007. He is currently studying the Certificate II in General and Vocational Education and the Certificate III in English for Further Study at Lismore Campus.

Ms Weingarth says that Mihuku wants to fast track his education and particularly his English Language acquisition, so that he can ultimately go to university.

“Mihuku has a vision that he will one day work with UNHCR for the benefit of refugees,” says Ms Weingarth.

“His study plans require him to enrol in 2 courses per year and as there is no way he could afford this, this scholarship is tremendous news for him,” she added.

According to Ms Weingarth, TAFE NSW - North Coast Institute offers a wide range of foundation, literacy and numeracy courses that enable students to commence a study and career pathway in an achievable and flexible way.

“Anyone who is inspired by Mihuku’s success and wants to find out what opportunities are available should call our Customer Service Centre on 131 601, or visit our website www.nci.tafensw.edu.au or call in at their local campus,” says Ms Weingarth.
