Monday 14th July, 2008

Two young people from the North Coast of NSW won their competition categories at the national WorldSkills competition held in Sydney over the weekend.

Megan Kuhn, who completed her Hairdressing apprenticeship through Port Macquarie TAFE Campus, was awarded the gold medal in the Hairdressing category and Joshua Harris, who completed his Metal Fabrication apprenticeship at Wollongbar TAFE Campus, was awarded the gold medal in the Welding competition.

Ms Kuhn and Mr Harris were part of a thirteen-strong team of young people, all ex-TAFE students, who represented the North Coast after winning their regional competitions held last year.

Megan Kuhn completed her Certificate III in Hairdressing last year and currently works at Vanessa’s Hair Fashion in Port Macquarie. Joshua Harris, who completed his Certificate III in Engineering (Fabrication) last year now works at the Lismore-based engineering company McKee Co, which is involved in the design, manufacture and service of equipment for the timber industry.

The WorldSkills Australia National Competition is a three day event held every second year (in between the regional competitions), and  attracts over 500 young people from all over Australia to compete in 50 trade and skill competition categories and contend for the opportunity to represent Australia in the International Competition next year in Canada.

The National Competition was held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour from 11-13th July and drew a large crowd from the Vocational Education and Training sector, high schools, industry and the community.
