Career nurse changes into fashion boutique owner

Thursday 24th January, 2008

Local TAFE student, Margaret Harley, has just made a major career change after recently completed a course in Applied Fashion Design at the Coffs Harbour Campus.

Margaret said that she was able to make the change not only because of the extensive new skills she gained but also because of the dedicated support from the teachers at TAFE NSW-North Coast Institute’s Coffs Harbour Campus.

“The teachers were fantastic, guiding me and developing my creative side,” Margaret said.

“The time spent on campus was always fun, and we all learned so much. It has helped me realise a dream I have always had… to design and make beautiful garments,” Margaret added.

“Also, the support from the teachers also inspired me to venture out and open my own business,” said Margaret.

After a long career in nursing, Margaret applied her newly gained understanding of the design industry and newly honed business and design skills to open her own boutique on Prince Street, Grafton, called ‘Coco Rosie’.

“My boutique will specialise in after-five and evening wear, featuring ‘one-off’ designer clothes, including some of my own creations, with personalised fittings and alterations,” Margaret said of her new enterprise.

Trish Field, head teacher of fashion, said “Margaret was a joy to have in our classrooms, her enthusiasm in following her dream and the high standard of her works was inspiring.”
