North Coast TAFE’s Kingscliff campus ahead of the rest

Friday, 9th May, 2008

North Coast TAFE’s Kingscliff Campus has been recognised as “a cut above the rest” when it comes to hairdressing, with the award of a Two Gold Star Rating by the Institute For Trade Skills Excellence (ITSE).

This is the second gold star rating the campus has received in recent weeks, with the Construction section having been awarded a Three Gold Star Rating for its carpentry courses just last week.

The Star Ratings Scheme is administered by ITSE and recognises excellence in trade skills training among TAFE and private training providers.

North Coast TAFE’s head teacher of hair and beauty, Betty Rensink, said receiving the Two Gold Star Rating was valuable recognition of the high quality of teaching delivered by the hairdressing team at Kingscliff.

“We are really pleased with the rating we have achieved. It recognises the skills of the teachers and the hard work they have put into ensuring they are at the ‘cutting edge’ of the industry,” she said.

“The process they undertook for the rating scheme was quite rigorous. After assessing the initial submission, a panel of assessors - which included local industry representatives - visited the campus and carefully checked our delivery practices.”

The Star Rating Scheme identifies the best training providers, industry by industry, and enables employers, career counsellors, potential students, and parents to distinguish excellence in trade training.

Industry areas within registered training organisations can receive either a: One Gold Star; Two Gold Star; or Three Gold Star rating under the scheme.

The Star Rating Scheme focuses on the following eight areas of skill shortage: Automotive, Building and Construction, Electrical, Hospitality and Personal Services, Manufacturing, Metals and Engineering, Mineral Resources, Rural and Farming.

Brian Wexham, Chief Executive Officer of The Institute for Trade Skills Excellence said the Star Rating Scheme gives students confidence when selecting a study course.

“One of the biggest concerns when choosing a course is whether or not it will get people the job they want when they complete the course.  Thanks to the Star Ratings Scheme, prospective students and employers now have a credible source to validate a course.

“The Scheme aims to recognise high performing registered training providers such as the North Coast TAFE, and help individual schools and faculties understand exactly what their clients want from their training.
