TAFE’s hair and beauty salon ‘best kept secret’

The Hair and Beauty faculty at North Coast TAFE’s Coffs Harbour Education Campus has a long standing reputation for delivering a high standard of nationally accredited training for the region’s apprentice hairdressers, according to Teacher-in-Charge, Julie-ann Willis.
“While I’m sure members of the public are aware of our reputation in this area, they may not be aware that they can actually make an appointment at our simulated salon environment and receive hairdressing services and beauty treatment for a nominal fee,” says Ms Willis.
“This hands-on experience with actual clients ensures that students get the best possible all-round training, including how to interact well with clients,” adds Ms Willis.
Ms Willis says that this practical experience, combined with the fully equipped hairdressing and beauty salons on campus and teaching staff with many years of industry experience, means that individuals of all ages have a range of options for studies to fast-track their careers.
“Younger prospective students don’t necessarily need to leave home to achieve a post-school education, which is an added bonus,” says Ms Willis.
“We offer Certificate II, III and IV and the Diploma courses in Hairdressing, which caters for the traditional apprentice or trainee, as well as full time students who, after successful completion of all assessments, can leave as fully qualified hairdressers, in one year,” says Julie-ann Willis.
“We even provide accredited units in hairdressing and beauty for school students, as part of their HSC studies.”
For students wanting qualifications to work in the beauty industry, there is a range of courses, from Short to Advanced Certificates in areas like nail technology, make-up for photography and more.
